Since 1837, locals and travelers alike have gathered beneath the sprawling canopy of sweet chestnuts to enjoy crisp Franconian lager served not from a tent, but from centuries-old cave cellars carved directly into the sandstone hillside. The sight of amber beer being carried up stone steps from cool underground vaults, under the dappled light of towering chestnut branches, is one of the most atmospheric beer-drinking experiences in all of Germany.

Unlike Oktoberfest, the Annafest has no entry fee, no massive rides, and no corporate sponsorship. What it lacks in spectacle, it more than makes up for in charm. The beer comes from Forchheim's own small and family-run breweries — including Greif, Eichbaum, and Hönig — poured fresh from underground stone vaults where it has matured for months at naturally cool temperatures. This traditional "Kellerbier" (cellar beer) method predates modern refrigeration and gives the lager a uniquely smooth, slightly cloudy character that you simply cannot replicate. The easiest way to reach the town is by regional train (RE or RB services) from either city — both journeys take approximately 30 minutes. From Munich, take an ICE train to Nuremberg (about 1 hour) and transfer to a regional train.

By car, take the A73 motorway (Nuremberg–Bamberg) and exit at Forchheim. Street parking is available around town, and the Kellerwald cellars are a short uphill walk from the station or any parking area — a pleasant 10-minute stroll through quiet residential streets that gives you a glimpse of Forchheim's everyday charm before the festival begins.

The festival's origins go back to 1837, when Forchheim brewers began serving their summer-aged lagers from the cool cellars on Keller Hill — a traditional practice necessitated by the fact that brewing was impossible during the warm summer months, so beer had to be stored in ice-cooled underground vaults until it was ready to drink.
