What to Expect
The Erlanger Bergkirchweih is Franconia's answer to a traditional beer festival. Held in the sandstone cellars carved into the mountainside above Erlangen, the festival features local Franconian breweries, traditional food stalls, and a unique atmosphere unlike any other Bavarian Volksfest. Free entry to the festival grounds and beer gardens.
The Story
The Bergkirchweih is one of the oldest festivals in Franconia, dating back centuries. The sandstone cellars used for serving beer were originally excavated for beer storage before refrigeration, following the same Bavarian tradition as the Bamberg cellars. The festival grew around these natural amphitheater settings carved into the rock face.
