What to Expect at the Tollwood Winter Festival

Holden on the very same grounds as Oktoberfest, the Tollwood Winter Festival is a completely different experience — a cosmopolitan, culturally rich celebration that combines international music and theater performances with a sprawling festival village focused on global cuisine, sustainability, and creative arts. Running from late November through January (usually until the 6th), Tollwood transforms the Theresienwiese from a Bavarian beer ground into a multilingual, multicultural winter wonderland.

Unlike traditional Bavarian festivals, Tollwood places a heavy emphasis on arts and culture: a rotating program of concerts, cabaret, circus acts, and theater performances take place in the Festivalzelt (festival tent) and various smaller venues. The festival village features dozens of food stalls offering everything from Thai curries and Ethiopian stews to vegan comfort food and artisanal pastries — all sourced with a strong sustainability and fair-trade ethos. Glühwein is available (€5–€6), and there's a dedicated bio- (organic) beer selection alongside mulled cider and punch.

Entry to the festival grounds is completely free — you only pay if you want to attend specific ticketed performances in the main tent. This makes Tollwood one of the most accessible cultural events in Munich's winter calendar.

Getting There

The Tollwood Winter Festival is held at the Theresienwiese — the same location as Oktoberfest, making it trivially easy to reach. Take the U-Bahn lines U4/U5 to Theresienwiese station, or walk from Hauptbahnhof (about 15 minutes). S-Bahn lines S1–S8 stop at Hackerbrücke, which is 5 minutes from the festival. Same excellent transit connections as Oktoberfest, but with far fewer crowds.
