The Würzburger Weindorf (Wine Village) is Franconia's premier wine festival, transforming the historic Marktplatz into a fairy-tale village of thatched-roof wine pergolas, wooden wine barrels, and candlelit tables beneath the baroque splendor of the Würzburg Residenz — a UNESCO World Heritage palace that rivals Versailles in its grandeur. Held annually in late summer (typically late August into early September), the Weindorf brings together over 40 winemakers from across Franconia to showcase the region's distinctive wines in an atmosphere that is at once festive, elegant, and deeply rooted in a wine-growing tradition that stretches back over a thousand years.

Unlike beer festivals, the Weindorf has a distinctly refined atmosphere. Wine is served not in plastic cups but in traditional Franconian Bocksbeutel — the flat, round-bellied green glass bottles that are the signature vessel of Franconian wine, and which have protected status under EU law. The white wine selection focuses on the grape variety Franconia grows best: Silvaner, a crisp, earthy, food-friendly white that pairs beautifully with local cuisine. Also prominent are Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, and the increasingly popular Bacchus. Red wine (mainly Spätburgunder/Pinot Noir) is also available from the region's top estates. Food at the Weindorf is thoughtfully sourced: expect local cheeses from the Franconian countryside, freshly baked bread, Obatzda (a creamy Bavarian cheese spread), grilled fish from nearby rivers, and traditional Flammkuchen (Alsatian-style flatbread). The atmosphere is convivial but more relaxed than a beer fest — it's a place for lingering conversations, long dinners under the stars, and discovering wines you won't find outside of Franconia.

Getting There

Würzburg is well-connected to Munich by ICE train (approximately 2 hours 15 minutes direct, or about 2.5 hours with a transfer in Nuremberg). Regional trains are also available with a change in Nuremberg. The Marktplatz is a 10–15 minute walk from the main train station, following the main boulevard (Dürrbachstraße) past the baroque city center. By car, take the A3 motorway from Munich (about 2 hours 30 minutes). Ample parking is available in the city center garages.

Würzburg's wine-growing history dates to at least 779 AD, when Charlemagne established the first documented vineyards here. Franconia's wine is defined by the Bocksbeutel, a bottle shape so distinctive it is protected by EU law and only permitted for wines from this specific region.
