Quick answer

Würzburg Wine Village is a wine fest in Würzburg, Bavaria. It runs from May 29 – Jun 7, 2026. Ten days of Franconian wine on Würzburg's medieval market square, run by a cooperative of local restaurateurs rather than the region's wineries.

Würzburg Wine Village starting May 29, 2026 at the historic market square.

The Würzburger Weindorf is an intimate, restaurateur-run wine festival on Würzburg's historic Marktplatz — nine participating restaurant businesses in 2026, each running a rustic booth with both wine and a full food menu, close to 100 Franconian wines from roughly 30 estates. The 2026 edition (29 May–7 June) occupies the lower market square only. It's a different event from the Würzburger Weinparade, a separate, winery-run wine festival held later in the year at the same square.

The full story

The Würzburger Weindorf is an intimate, restaurant-run wine festival on Würzburg's historic Marktplatz, held every spring — 29 May through 7 June for the 2026 edition, ten days on the lower market square only. Unlike the region's larger open-pour wine festivals, it's organized by a cohort of Würzburg restaurateurs — nine businesses in 2026 — rather than by wineries, each running a rustic wooden booth with both wine and a substantial sit-down food menu across roughly 40 booths and 4,500 seats. Close to 100 Franconian wines from about 30 estates are on offer, anchored by Silvaner and Bacchus and served both by the glass and by the traditional flask-shaped Bocksbeutel bottle. The festival opens with a ceremony at the side portal of the Marienkapelle on the evening of 29 May, and runs daily from around 11am to 11:30pm — though bottle sales stop at 10:30pm, after which only individual glasses are sold.

Franconian wine culture itself runs far deeper than this festival. A January 777 charter records Charlemagne's donation of land near Hammelburg to the Monastery of Fulda — the earliest known reference to wine cultivation in what became the Franconian wine region — and vineyards specifically near Würzburg are recorded from 779. The Bocksbeutel bottle's own institutional history starts later still: a 1726 city-council decision to bottle the prestigious 1718-vintage Würzburger Stein wine in the distinctive flask shape, restricted by a 1728 regulation to protect the wine's reputation from imitators. The Weindorf festival itself is a much newer layer on top of all that older history — founded in the late 1980s, credited to then-city-councilman Gerhard Pröschel and sixteen Würzburg restaurateurs.

One distinction worth making before planning a visit: this is not the Würzburger Weinparade, a separate wine festival held at the very same Unterer Marktplatz but organized around the region's wineries rather than restaurateurs, and scheduled later in the year (27 August–6 September 2026). The two share a square and a season of the same city's wine culture, but different organizers, different formats, and different calendar slots. See the Würzburg Wine Village page or explore Lower Franconia.

History

Franconian viticulture traces to a January 777 charter recording Charlemagne's donation of land near Hammelburg to the Monastery of Fulda — not, as sometimes stated, to the Bishop of Würzburg; Würzburg's own diocese was founded separately in 742 by Saint Boniface, and vineyards specifically near Würzburg are recorded from 779. The flask-shaped Bocksbeutel bottle has its own, much later institutional history: a 1726 Würzburg city-council decision to bottle the prestigious 1718-vintage Würzburger Stein wine in the distinctive shape, restricted by a 1728 regulation to protect the wine's reputation. The Würzburger Weindorf festival itself is newer still — founded in the late 1980s, led by then-city-councilman Gerhard Pröschel and sixteen Würzburg restaurateurs.
