The full story
Kriegenbrunn's Kirchweih opens the season for Erlangen's eleven neighborhood Stadtteilkirchweihen, a four-day community fair held every June directly in front of the district's volunteer fire station. The 2026 edition runs Friday 19 through Monday 22 June, with one festival tent, a handful of rides, and food stalls — a genuinely small-scale affair, in keeping with its own "klein aber fein" (small but fine) motto. Entry to the grounds is free, as it is across all eleven of Erlangen's Stadtteilkirchweihen; only rides, tent seating, and food and drink are paid for individually.
Rather than an outside fairground operator, the fair is run cooperatively by the local parish, the volunteer fire brigade, the singing society, and the traditional Kerwasburschen and Kerwasmadli (Kirchweih lads and lasses), working alongside an appointed Festwirt who runs the tent. The pattern repeats each year: the Kerwasburschen fetch and raise a decorated Kirchweih tree, a church service on Sunday is followed by the traditional "Betzenaustanzen" dance, and the tapping of the first beer keg has in recent years been performed by Erlangen's own Oberbürgermeister. The four days close on Monday with a white-sausage breakfast and an evening closing ceremony.
Kriegenbrunn itself is an old settlement — first recorded by name in 1132 and incorporated into the city of Erlangen only in 1972 — but that village history is separate from the Kirchweih's own age: the fair's own founding year is unstated, and the village's founding shouldn't be read as the festival's. For visitors, that makes it less a headline destination than a low-key, bike-accessible stop along the Regnitz valley — best suited to Erlangen-area locals and families looking for an authentic, small-scale Kerwa rather than a big-city festival. See the Kirchweih Kriegenbrunn page or explore Middle Franconia.
