The full story
Altomünster's Pfingstmarkt is as plain as small-town Bavarian markets get: one day, Pentecost Monday, goods stalls filling the historic Marktplatz alongside a parallel flea market on Nerbstraße — one of exactly four fixed annual Jahrmärkte the Marktgemeinde runs each year, alongside a spring Fastenmarkt, a summer Magdalenenmarkt, and an autumn Kirchweihmarkt. There's no admission fee, no fairground, and — some years — a concert on the square, making it an easy pairing with a walk through Altomünster's genuinely old monastery church and historic center.
That town history runs deep: a hermit named Alto founded a monastic cell here around 750 AD, and the town's own market rights trace to a seal from roughly 1340, marked as "600 years of city and market rights" in 1991. None of that is the Pfingstmarkt's own age, though — the market shouldn't borrow the town's much older story as its own. Just don't confuse it with Dachau's own, differently-dated Pfingstmarkt in the same district, or with Bayreuth's unrelated market of the same generic name. See Pfingstmarkt Altomünster page or explore Upper Bavaria.
History
Altomünster's own civic history reaches back to around 750 AD, when the hermit Alto founded a monastic cell here that grew into a Benedictine and later Brigittine monastery, with the town's own market rights attested by a seal from around 1340 and marked as '600 years of city and market rights' in 1991. That is a genuinely deep town history — but it belongs to Altomünster's market-rights charter, not to the modern Pfingstmarkt.
