The full story
Jahninselfest turns Regensburg's Jahninsel — a small Danube island directly beneath the medieval Steinerne Brücke — into a two-day, ticketed indie/punk/ska/garage-rock music festival every June. The 2026 edition runs Friday 5 June (doors 16:00) and Saturday 6 June (doors 14:00), the 37th edition of a festival that traces to 1988, when a self-organized group of Regensburg students launched it on the island. It's been run since 2000 by the non-commercial cultural association Scants of Grace e.V., in cooperation with the Stadtjugendring Regensburg, entirely by volunteers — helpers are compensated only in admission and food/drink vouchers, not pay.
This isn't a beer-tent Volksfest: there's no Festzelt, no house beer, no brewery sponsor. Catering runs through multiple food trucks and general drink stands instead, and the lineup spans punk, garage rock, indie, ska, and electroclash acts across the main stage, alongside a Kleinkunstbühne for variety/cabaret programming and a dedicated kids' area. General admission is paid — tiered day tickets and a weekend combo — with free entry limited to accompanied children under 15 on both days and accompanied seniors over 80 on Saturday. There's no campground and no open fires permitted on site; the nearest significant parking is about a 10-minute walk away.
The island and the bridge above it are far older than the festival — the Steinerne Brücke dates to the 12th century — and the "Jahn" in the festival's name comes from 19th-century gymnastics figure Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, the same namesake shared (with no organizational connection) by the unrelated SSV Jahn Regensburg football club and its Jahnstadion. Searches for the festival are sometimes diluted by unrelated football-club results because of that shared name. See Jahninselfest Regensburg page or explore Upper Palatinate.
