The Burschenverein itself is the older institution here, founded on 29 December 1882 out of the town's historic Bürgerwehr civic-militia parade tradition. The Straßenweinfest is a distinctly more recent addition — the association's own history page states it has run the street wine festival annually only since 1977, working with the Musikgemeinschaft — making 2026 roughly its 49th or 50th running, a genuinely different number from the Verein's own 144-year history.
Admission is free, in keeping with the standard Franconian street-wine-fest model of paying per glass rather than at the gate. The Historischer Burschenverein Sommerhausen mit Trachtengruppe e.V. was founded on 29 December 1882, tracing to the town's historic Bürgerwehr civic-militia parade tradition tied to the local Kirchweih; a women's and girls' Trachtengruppe joined in 1952. The association itself has organized this Straßenweinfest annually only since 1977, in cooperation with the Musikgemeinschaft Sommerhausen — a distinctly more recent tradition than the Verein's own founding, making 2026 roughly the festival's 49th–50th running.
