Freisinger Altstadtfest 2026 runs Saturday 18 July, 16:00–24:00, on Marienplatz and Obere/Untere Hauptstraße — free entry. First held in 1978, 2026 is its 48th edition. Friday 17 July's Rocknacht is a separately organized concert, not part of the Altstadtfest.
- Best for
- Freising locals and Domberg visitors wanting a single free Saturday-night Altstadt party with two distinct brewery zones to choose between, rather than one generic beer-garden stroll.
- Booking urgency
- Low — free street festival, no reservation needed. Arrive by 17:00 for Marienplatz seating before the evening peak; the festival runs rain or shine, with no rescheduled rain date if weather turns bad.
Freising Altstadtfest — Saturday 18 July 2026, 16:00–24:00, turning Marienplatz and the Hauptstraßen into an open Biergarten, free entry.
Freisinger Altstadtfest runs Saturday 18 July 2026, 16:00–24:00, with Marienplatz plus Obere and Untere Hauptstraße forming Freising's largest open beer-garden stroll — around 500 beer-table sets across two zones. Hofbräuhaus Freising pours in the main Marienplatz/Untere Hauptstraße Biergarten; Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, headquartered in Freising, pours separately in the Obere Hauptstraße zone. Opening ceremony is 18:00 on the Sparkassenbühne, with music from the town band and a Blasmusik act. Friday 17 July's Rocknacht (Marienplatz from 18:00) is a separately organized concert, not part of the Altstadtfest itself.
The full story
Every summer, Freising's Marienplatz and its two Hauptstraßen turn into an open-air beer garden for the Altstadtfest — around 500 beer-table sets, two brewery zones, and a full Saturday evening of music. The 2026 edition runs 18 July, 16:00 to midnight, opening at 18:00 on the Sparkassenbühne with the town band and a Blasmusik act. Hofbräuhaus Freising pours on Marienplatz and the Untere Hauptstraße; Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, headquartered in Freising, pours separately on the Obere Hauptstraße — giving visitors a genuine choice of house beer depending on which end of the festival they land in. Entry is free throughout.
The festival is younger than it might feel standing in the middle of it. It began in 1978 as a stand-alone successor to earlier inter-club sports competitions the city's sports association had run through the early 1970s — when interest in that competitive format faded, organizers pivoted to a straightforward street festival instead, and it was, by their own account, an immediate success. 2026 marks its 48th edition, a genuine local institution in its own right but a comparatively recent one next to Freising itself, whose founding traces to Bishop Korbinian's arrival in 724 AD — an age difference the city marked with a major 1,300th-anniversary celebration on the very same Marienplatz just two years earlier, in 2024.
Friday evening, the night before, brings a separately organized concert series called Rocknacht — also on Marienplatz, also free, but not part of the Altstadtfest itself and run by a different organizing team. The two make an easy weekend pairing for visitors staying in Freising, but they shouldn't be treated as one continuous event when planning around either one specifically. See Freisinger Altstadtfest or explore Upper Bavaria.
History
Freisinger Altstadtfest was founded in 1978 as a stand-alone successor to earlier inter-club sports competitions the city's Stadtverband für Sport had organized through the early 1970s. That first edition became, in the organizers' own words, a huge success — drawing several times the expected crowd — and it's run most years since, aside from a 2020–2021 COVID pause. 2026 marks its 48th edition. The festival carries none of Freising's own much older civic history: the city's own founding is traditionally dated to Bishop Korbinian's arrival in 724 AD, marked with a major 1,300th-anniversary celebration in 2024 — three and a half centuries before this fest's own start.
