Quick answer

The Bayreuther Volksfest runs 22–31 May 2026 on the Volksfestplatz at Äußere Badstraße 16 in Bayreuth, Upper Franconia. For ten days the fairground becomes a festival mile with rides, beer gardens, live music, and Franconian festival culture, including a Ferris wheel, candy floss, festival beer, family action days, and opening and closing fireworks.

Ten-day city fair on Bayreuth’s Volksfestplatz with rides, festival beer, live music, and fireworks.

Each late spring the Bayreuther Volksfest turns the Volksfestplatz into a colourful fairground mile for ten days around the Pentecost weekend. Expect Ferris wheel thrills, candy floss, festival beer served in cosy beer gardens, and live music spanning generations — from a historic horse-drawn carousel to newer high-tech rides — capped by opening and closing fireworks. It's a separate event from Bayreuth's April Frühlingsfest, held at the same grounds by the same organizing association but under its own name and history.

The full story

The Bayreuther Volksfest takes over the Volksfestplatz for ten days every late May, timed to bracket the Pentecost weekend — 22 through 31 May for the 2026 edition. Opening night brings the festival's signature ritual: a procession through the city arriving at the grounds in the early evening, followed by a ceremonial keg-tapping by the mayor and an evening of music and fireworks. The closing Sunday brings a second, larger fireworks display to send the ten days off.

Rather than anchoring around one big beer tent, recent editions have spread the food and drink across several themed beer gardens and food-garden concepts — a bratwurst-and-grill garden with live music, a cocktail bar, and new international food concepts each year — alongside classic and modern rides that range from a historic horse-drawn carousel to towering thrill machines. Rides, games, and food are priced individually, including through the discounted Volksfesttaler token currency. A packed family calendar runs through the middle of the ten days: a Family Day with grounds-wide discounts, a Ladies' Night, an afternoon geared toward accessibility, and a children's rally.

The fairground itself has deep roots in Bayreuth: the city moved its traditional Volksfest to the Obere Au starting in 1930, the event settled onto today's purpose-built Äußere Badstraße site in 1964, and the current late-May, Pentecost-anchored date was fixed from 1968 onward. That long, multi-venue history means no single founding year applies cleanly to the festival as it runs today. It's also worth keeping straight from Bayreuth's other major fairground event: the Bayreuther Frühlingsfest, held every April at the same grounds under the same organizing association and tracing to its own 1956 start — a different festival, on a different weekend, with its own separate history. See Bayreuth Volksfest page or explore Upper Franconia.

History

The Volksfestplatz has hosted a Bayreuth city fair since at least 1930, when the city moved its traditional Volksfest to the Obere Au; the event settled onto today's purpose-built site on Äußere Badstraße in 1964, and the late-May date anchored to the Pentecost weekend was fixed from 1968 onward. No single founding year applies cleanly to the Bayreuther Volksfest as it runs today, given this longer, multi-venue lineage. This event is also distinct from Bayreuth's other major fairground festival, the Bayreuther Frühlingsfest — held every April at the same grounds under the same organizing association (Sektion Bayreuth) and separately tracing to 1956 — which should never be conflated with this May/Pentecost event.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Bayreuth Volksfest 2026?
22–31 May 2026 — ten days bracketing the Pentecost weekend.
Where is the festival held?
On the Volksfestplatz Bayreuth, Äußere Badstraße 16, 95448 Bayreuth — centrally located with parking nearby.
What can visitors expect?
Rides and games, beer gardens with live music, family-friendly action days, evening programmes, classic and newer attractions, plus opening and closing fireworks.
Is the full daily programme published yet?
Daily opening times and the full band and ride lineup are released closer to the festival start; the dates and overall character for 2026 are already set.
Is this the same as the Bayreuther Frühlingsfest?
No. The Frühlingsfest is a separate festival held every April at the same Volksfestplatz grounds under the same organizing association (Sektion Bayreuth); its 2026 edition (4–12 April) is its 70th, tracing back to 1956. The Bayreuther Volksfest is the larger, later event, running ten days at the end of May around Pentecost — a different festival on a different weekend, not a rebranding of the spring fair.
