About Upper Franconia
Upper Franconia (Oberfranken) is northeastern Bavaria, bordering Thuringia, Saxony, and the Czech Republic, with Bayreuth as the regional seat and Bamberg, Bayreuth, Coburg, and Hof as its district-free cities. This isn't one compact destination — it's a connected mix of historic brewing cities, market towns, and landscape: Franconian Switzerland's castle ruins and caves, the Fichtelgebirge's uplands, and the Franconian Forest between them.
Beer culture that changes town to town
Upper Franconia is a place to taste beer as local geography, not a single style. The region has an unusually dense network of small breweries, and the vocabulary shifts with it — Kellerbier, Zwickelbier, dark and pale lagers, wheat beer, bock. Bamberg's Rauchbier (smoked beer) is the clearest city-specific signature in the region, alongside unfiltered Zwickelbier and low-carbonation Ungespundetes. Food follows the same local logic: bratwurst varies by town, and inn and festival cooking runs to Sauerbraten, Schäufele, potato dumplings, and sweet Küchla.
A beer calendar, not one big festival
Spring opens with Walberlafest, a hilltop gathering near Kirchehrenbach combining a hike, Maibaum, and local beer (Apr 30 – May 3, 2026). Bamberg's long outdoor cellar season runs May 1 through September 30 — less a single date than a whole-summer planning theme. Bayreuth adds Maisel's Weissbierfest in May. July and August are the region's busiest stretch: Annafest Forchheim (Jul 24 – Aug 3) and Kulmbach Beer Week (Jul 25 – Aug 2) overlap, so pick a base rather than trying to cover both fully. Bamberg's Sandkerwa takes over the city's medieval alleys August 20–24, with Rauchbier and a fishermen's jousting tournament. Late November brings three Christmas markets — Bamberg, Bayreuth, and Coburg.
Practical planning
No sufficiently authoritative region-wide transport source was available. The inventory spans city centers, hilltop events, brewery gardens, and rural markets — check the specific event's own access details, especially for hilltop and rural festivals like Walberlafest.
