The full story
"Rawetzer" isn't festival branding — it's what Marktredwitz calls itself, a dialect name descending from the town's historic name Redwitz. The Rawetzer Volksfestl runs 25–29 June 2026 at Auenpark on Rößlermühlstraße, opening Thursday at 17:00 with the traditional Bieranstich at 18:30 — Oberbürgermeister Oliver Weigel, freshly re-elected with 73.6% of the vote in March 2026, taps the first keg. Grounds access is free; the Festzelt, food, and rides are paid.
The town's real festival tradition runs much deeper than this specific event. The "Rawetzer Volks- und Schützenfest" — a folk-and-marksmen's festival — dates to 1834, historically staged at the Angerplatz with the local Schützenverein and considered the city's oldest festival. But the Angerplatz has been under renovation, and since around 2022 the city has run this smaller, deliberately downsized "Volksfestl" at Auenpark instead. Treating the Volksfestl's founding year as 1834 would misrepresent a recent substitute as a two-century institution — the two are related in name and spirit, but not the same event.
Monday closes the run with two distinct halves: an afternoon Kindernachmittag with half-price rides for families, followed by an evening "Tag der Betriebe & Vereine" for the town's own businesses and clubs, with table and voucher reservations opening 22 June through the city's Susanne Menzel. See the Rawetzer Volksfestl page or explore Upper Franconia.
History
'Rawetzer' is the town's own dialect name for Marktredwitz and its residents, descended from the historic place name Redwitz (Radewize). The city's Volks- und Schützenfest tradition dates to 1834, historically staged at the Angerplatz with the local Schützenverein — but that lineage belongs to the older, larger 1834 Volks- und Schützenfest, not to the Volksfestl. Since the Angerplatz has been under renovation, the city has run a smaller substitute format at Auenpark from around 2022 onward, branded 'Volksfestl' to signal its reduced scale; this is that newer, interim event, not the 1834 tradition itself.
