Lower Franconia's largest Volksfest — 17 days on the Talavera with Festzelt, rides, and parallel Kilianimesse on the Marktplatz, 3–19 July 2026.
The Kiliani-Volksfest is Unterfranken's largest folk festival, running 17 days on Würzburg's Talavera fairground with the Kiliani-Festzelt (Würzburger Hofbräu), rides, and beer gardens. The parallel Kilianimesse fills the Marktplatz with market stalls. The 2026 edition ran 3–19 July, with opening beer tapping on 3 July at 18:00 and closing fireworks on 19 July at 22:30. Opening hours: Mon–Thu 14:00–24:00, Fri–Sat 14:00–01:00, Sun 13:00–24:00.
The full story
Every July, Würzburg's riverside Talavera fills with rides, sideshows, and the Hofbräu-run Kiliani-Festzelt for 17 days — the largest Volksfest in Lower Franconia, a ranking stated directly by the City of Würzburg itself rather than just repeated by third-party press. The 2026 edition ran 3–19 July, opening with the mayor's traditional keg-tapping and closing with a festival church service and fireworks. Entry to the fairground is free; visitors pay for rides, food, and the festival's own dedicated Hofbräu-brewed Festbier.
The name carries genuine religious weight. St. Kilian was a 7th-century Irish missionary bishop who traveled to Würzburg around 686–689 to Christianize the Franconian duchy and was martyred there; Pope Zacharias authorized his veneration as a martyr in 751, and Würzburg's first bishop had his relics ceremonially elevated on 8 July 752 — the date that anchors the festival's July timing every year since. Kilian remains patron saint of the city, the Diocese of Würzburg, and Franconia as a whole.
Running the same dates on the Marktplatz is a second, older tradition: the Kilianimesse, a market fair that traces to an imperial charter Emperor Konrad II granted the Würzburg bishopric in 1030 — nearly a thousand years of continuous history. The rides-and-beer-tent fairground Volksfest that most visitors think of as "Kiliani" developed later, as a separate civic tradition alongside that ancient market rather than a direct continuation of it. For visitors, the two make a natural pairing: a city-center browse through the Kilianimesse's herbs, ceramics, and household stalls, followed by an evening at the riverside fairground and its Festzelt. See Kiliani-Volksfest or explore Lower Franconia.
History
The festival takes its name from St. Kilian, a 7th-century Irish missionary bishop martyred near Würzburg around 689 and venerated since 752 as patron saint of the city, the Diocese of Würzburg, and Franconia as a whole. It's timed around his 8 July feast day (Kilianstag). A parallel, much older tradition — the Kilianimesse market fair on the Marktplatz, running the same dates — traces to a market charter Emperor Konrad II granted the Würzburg bishopric in 1030, nearly a thousand years of continuous history. The fairground Volksfest itself, with its rides and beer tent, developed later as a separate civic tradition alongside that market.
