The full story
Isen's Volksfest began almost by accident. In 1984, the market town marked the 550th anniversary of its elevation to Markt status, and then-mayor Hans-Edmund Lechner folded a small folk-festival component into that year's celebrations. It drew strong enough turnout that Lechner pushed to keep it going every year after — producing a standalone annual festival from 1985 onward, distinct from the one-off anniversary program that spawned it.
That founding year isn't stated outright anywhere, but it's unusually well cross-verified for a small-town festival: the organizer's own history page confirms the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled for COVID-19, and four independently sourced edition/year pairs — the 31st edition in 2015, the 37th in 2023, the 39th in 2025, and the 40th in 2026 — all resolve cleanly against a single 1985 starting point once that two-year gap is applied. Mayor Siegfried Fischer opened the festival for 24 consecutive years, from 1996 to 2020; his successor, Irmgard Hibler, took office in 2020 but couldn't preside over an actual festival until the 2022 resumption.
The 2026 edition runs Wednesday 24 through Monday 29 June, with grounds access free and the Festzelt and rides paid separately. A Volksfestbus shuttle runs specifically Friday and Saturday nights, with pickup points across surrounding towns — visitors attending on any of the other four days should plan alternate transport. See the Isener Volksfest page or explore Upper Bavaria.
History
In 1984, Isen marked the 550th anniversary of its elevation to market-town status, and then-mayor Hans-Edmund Lechner folded a folk-festival component into that year's celebrations. It drew strong enough attendance that Lechner argued for keeping it going every year afterward — producing a standalone annual Isener Volksfest starting in 1985, independent of the one-time 1984 anniversary program. In the years 2020 and 2021 the festival was cancelled for the COVID-19 pandemic; mayor Siegfried Fischer opened it for 24 consecutive years (1996–2020) before Irmgard Hibler took office, though the pandemic prevented her from presiding over an actual festival until the 2022 resumption. 2026 marks the 40th edition.
